Community Trust Launches LDRL

Following on from the huge success of Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) we are now excited to grow our inclusion profile to involve Learning Disability Rugby League (LDRL) also.

The first open session will begin from Monday, 30th April at Crigglestone All Blacks, South View, Wakefield, WF4 3HN and will take place at 5.30pm for one hour. Weekly sessions will commence thereafter at the same time and venue.

The Wakefield Trinity Community Trust are also open to working in partnership with organisations specialising in providing opportunities for those with learning disabilities which could include delivering sessions at various venues, to suit our partners.

While there are many disabilities that may affect learning, the most common are Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyspraxia, Fragile X Syndrome and while Cerebral Palsy is not a learning disability, it is common for those with CP to also have a learning disability.

Craig Shepherd, Wakefield Trinity Community Trust, said, “We had planned to launch Learning Disability Rugby League as the second stage in the development of our ‘Inclusion’ strand anyway. The timing is right as we’ve seen a successful start to the Physical Disability RL provision and that continues to grow. We’ve also completed our search for a disability focused team member and the successful candidate will start work with us over the next few weeks.”

“Locally, our partnerships have been building for some time. We had our new disability supporters club, Ambitions4Kirklees, with us at the Leeds game last week. They loved it!”

“It will be ‘tag’ or ‘touch’ rugby that’s played, not full contact, so there’s no need to worry as a parent or carer. A safe environment is key to participant enjoyment and that’s something we can guarantee.”
